all is upon us, so that means it is almost time for the University of
Oklahoma Math Day! This is an annual event organized by the OU
Department of Mathematics. Math Day will take place this year on
Wednesday, November 16, from 10:15am to 4:30pm.
The event has happened every year for over a decade, but we are excited
this year to expand our outreach to high schools in North Texas (and
nearby areas).
The event will be held in the Thurman J. White Forum Building (OCCE
Forum Building), located on the northwest corner of Asp and Kellogg on
the beautiful OU South Campus. The website of Math Day is

Schedule. Math Day will take place at the Oklahoma Center for Continuing Education (OCCE), Forum Building, 1704 Asp Avenue, on the OU Campus in Norman.
On this website, you can find information about the schedule of events,
registration information, and information about our invited speaker,
Professor Jordan Schettler from San Jose State University.
The registration deadline is November 9, but it would be very helpful if
you can register even earlier. The registration fee for each student is
$5, and this includes the cost of lunch. Each school is required to
bring at least one chaperone (teacher, parent, etc.) for every 12
students. Lunch will also be provided to chaperones for no cost.
If you are unfamiliar with Math Day, below is a bit more about the day’s
events:
- In the morning there will be tests in Algebra I, Algebra II,
Geometry, and Trigonometry (running concurrently, starting at 11am). For
the students not participating in the tests, there will be a Fun Session
at the same time.
- Next is Round 1 of the Math Bowl.
- We’ll have lunch and prepare for Round 2 of the Math Bowl. At least
one team from each school will make it to the afternoon round. Math Bowl
is really exciting for the students because it is a real-time math
competition in teams, in the style of the TV show Jeopardy.
- Following the final round of the Math Bowl, we’ll be presented with
an invited lecture by Professor Jordan Schettler of San Jose State
University. His presentation is entitled “Number Theory and Music: How
to build a Fanned-Fret Guitar and a Xenharmonic Keyboard”.
- Math Day closes with an awards ceremony, where we award a variety of
prizes for the students.
Please check out the Math Day 2016 website at the link above. We are
looking forward to the event, and we hope you are able to make it!
Please respond to this email or call 405-325-6711 if you have any
questions.
Best wishes,

Assistant Professor of Mathematics
